Internationally renowned mosaic artist, Emma Biggs will offer a presentation and discussion of her work at the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College.

Biggs established the Mosaic Workshop in 1987 — the UK’s most thriving mosaic studio. She is Senior Tutor in Mosaic at West Dean College and has written a number of books on mosaic, including the best-selling Encyclopaedia of Mosaic Techniques. Her work is held in public galleries, museums, and private collections. She has appeared on television and radio, including recent appearances on BBC Radio 4’s flagship culture program, Front Row.

Recently she has taken ceramics as a creative starting point with Five Sisters, an exhibition featuring mosaics she made from recovered thirteenth century pottery shards, and Made in England, a work for the Potteries Museum in Stoke-on-Trent, assembled using “backstamps” – the makers’ marks on the backs of plates and cups. For more information go to her website or watch a Historyworks video conversation with Emma Biggs and husband, Matthew Collings.

Biggs’ lecture is sponsored by the Outten Visiting Artist Lecture series at Randolph College.

There will be a Q&A and reception following the lecture.
FREE and open to the public. We hope you will join us.

Tuesday, March 15th at 7:30 pm

After a three-year hiatus, Randolph College’s popular concert series, Music at the Maier, resumes in spectacular fashion! In harmony with the Maier’s focus on American visual art, emerging professional opera singers from Opera on the James’ Young Artist Program will perform American opera arias, classical songs and musical theater.

The Jane and Allen Tyler Young Artist Program is a new initiative by Opera on the James, and this concert will feature the first artists to audition into the program: Allison Pohl, Shirin Eskandani, Brendan Daly, John Dooley, and Tom Getty. Young Artist Programs are the training ground and springboard for technically advanced artists who are vocally secure, dramatically strong, and are building the stamina and performance experience to sing on the world stage.

Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and wine at a cash bar.

Tickets:
$10 for museum members and Barber of Seville ticketholders
$15 for non-members
FREE for Randolph College students!

Tickets may be picked up at the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College
or reserved through museum@randolphcollege.edu

Each year FRAME, Randolph College’s student docent club, selects a faculty member to give a lecture on interdisciplinary perspectives of art and aesthetics. This year, Dr. Amy R. Cohen, Associate Professor of Classics and director of the Randolph College Greek Play will share her research and insights into Greek conceptions of beauty and the sublime.

The ancient Greeks lay the foundations for nearly every aspect of modern Western culture, and nowhere so much so as in the arts. The Greeks have been renowned for their sculpture, painting, literature, and pottery for more than 2000 years. The ancient Greeks also invented theatre, which combines visual and verbal arts to hold a mirror up to human society.

This event is FREE and open to the public. A reception will follow.

For more information, e-mail museum@randolphcollege.edu or rgknol@randolphcollege.edu.
